Soft Sounds from Another Planet

Soft Sounds from Another Planet
This is a hypothetical album branding identity project done in collaboration with Mariahlyn Okuna and Kirk Reed. The project consists of a vinyl record, lyric book, poster, and related merchandise for Japanese Breakfast’s album Soft Sounds from Another Planet
Through the personal narratives of writer and lead singer, Michelle Zauner, the album focuses on topics relating to women’s roles in domesticity and romance, human connection, and the exploration of one's identity. The music is best described as expansive and explorative with spacious sound.
Our group was inspired by Jack White’s philosophy on the importance of vinyl records in the contemporary music scene. With today’s popular streaming services and the ability to endlessly skip and shuffle through music, the intended sequential listening experience of an album can be distorted. Therefore, it was essential for us to create a tactile way of experiencing music for listeners who share an appreciation for vinyl.
In addition, we found that vinyl record sales have hit a 25-year high within the last few years, so there is still a definite need for vinyl.
To further enhance the listening and visual experience, we included a lyric book and poster for consumers to enjoy while they listen to the album.
We also designed other merchandise: an enamel pin set, unisex t-shirt, tote bag, and baseball cap. We imagine these would be sold during a concert tour after the release of the vinyl album.
